Background of the study
Adapting classic literature into the Efik language is essential for preserving cultural heritage and making timeless narratives accessible to Efik speakers. Translators must grapple with maintaining the literary style, historical context, and cultural nuances of the original texts while rendering them in a way that resonates with modern Efik audiences (Udo, 2023). Traditional approaches range from literal translation to more adaptive, dynamic methods that prioritize conveying the underlying meaning and cultural significance (Anyanwu, 2024). However, inconsistencies in methodology can lead to variations in translation quality and loss of literary artistry. This study examines various translation practices employed in Efik adaptations of classic literature, analyzing translated anthologies, interviewing literary translators, and assessing reader reception. The goal is to determine which methods best preserve the aesthetic and cultural integrity of classic works while making them relevant for contemporary readers.

Statement of the problem
Translating classic literature into Efik often results in challenges, as literal translations may fail to capture metaphorical depth, while overly adaptive methods risk altering the original message (Udo, 2023). The absence of standardized guidelines further contributes to inconsistencies in quality, potentially diminishing the literary value of the adaptations.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine current translation practices in Efik adaptations of classic literature.
  2. To identify challenges in preserving literary and cultural elements.
  3. To recommend guidelines for improving translation fidelity.

Research questions:

  1. What methodologies are used?
  2. What challenges impact cultural and literary preservation?
  3. How can practices be standardized?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it informs best practices for adapting classic literature into Efik, ensuring cultural heritage and literary quality are maintained for future generations (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Efik adaptations of classic literature; other genres are excluded.

Definitions of terms:

  • Classic literature: Timeless works with enduring cultural significance.
  • Efik language: The language of the Efik people.
  • Translation practices: Methods used in adapting texts.
